What is the lake?

A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, surrounded by land. Most lakes are fed by rivers and streams. Lakes are larger and deeper than ponds. Lakes are temporary bodies of water. Lakes contribute to 0.009 % of available water.

The lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lanes in Scotland and Ireland).

Andhra Pradesh

Rajasthan

2. Nakki Lake 

• It is a very ancient sacred Lake, according to Hindu mythology. It is called by this name because it was dug from Nails (Nakh).
• Nakki Lake is located in the Indian hill station of Mount Abu in the Aravalli range (Rajasthan).
• The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed in this holy lake on 12 February 1948 and the Gandhi Ghat was constructed.
• Nakki Lake is also known as the National Lake of India.

3. Pushkar Lake

• Located in the city of Pushkar in Ajmer district, Rajasthan.

Jammu and Kashmir

1. Wular Lake 

• The largest freshwater lake in India.
• The Wullar Lake may span approximately 200-square kilometers.
• Jhelum River flows 40 km downstream from Srinagar and then exits.
• The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and fed by the Jhelum River.

• Chilika Lake is a Brackish water (saltwater) lagoon.
• Chilika Lake in Odisha is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second-largest Brackish water lagoon in the world.
• Ramsar Wetland Site.

Gujarat

1. Nalsarovar Lake 

• Nalsarovar Lake in Gujarat is possibly the largest water bird sanctuary in the country.
• It is the largest wetland sanctuary in Gujarat and the largest in India.
• Nalsarovar Lake was declared a bird sanctuary in April 1969.
• Ramsar Wetland Site.

2. Hamirsar Lake

•  It is a man-made lake.
• Hamrisar Lake is a 450-year-old lake named after the founder of Bhuj.

3. Kankaria Lake 

• Second Largest Lake in Ahmedabad, Gujrat.

Sikkim

1. Tsomgo Lake

• Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake is a snow-capped lake in East Sikkim.
• The lake is the venue for the Guru Purnima festival in which the people of Sikkim gather in the Jhakri Lake area to benefit from the healing properties of the lake's water.

Uttarakhand

1. Bhimtal Lake

• Bhimtal lake is in the city of Bhimtal in the state of Uttarakhand (India).
• It is the largest lake in the Kumaon region, known as the "Lake District of India".
• "C" shaped lake.

Meghalaya

1. Barapani Lake

• Shillong has Barapani or Umiam Lake.
• The lake originated in 1965 due to the Umiam Umaru Hydro Electric Power Project, the first hydel power project in the northeast region of India.

Telangana

1. Hussain Sagar Lake 

• It is a Heart Shaped Lake in Hyderabad.
• Hussain Sagar Lake was built during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562.
• It Connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Maharashtra

1. Salim Ali Lake

• It has also been renamed as a great ornithologist, naturalist Salim Ali (Birdman of India), and ornithologist of India.
• Salim Ali lake is also known as Salim Ali Talab, It is located near Delhi Gate and opposite Himayat Bagh, Aurangabad.
