As of now, there are a total of 37 Ramsar Wetland Sites In India of
International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Due to excessive water
pollution, development and road building there has been a lot of damage to the
Wetlands In India.

What is Ramsar Convention?
Ramsar Convention was first signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. It is an
International treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands,
so that they can be saved from Pollution, Human intrusions, and disturbance.
There are currently 2300 Ramsar Wetland Sites around the world. On the 1st of February 1982, the convention entered India. Currently, there are 37 Ramsar Wetland Sites In India.
Ramsar Convention works also with six other organizations known as International Organisation Partners (IOPs). Below is the list of other organizations:
- Birdlife International.
- Wetlands International.
- WWF International.
- International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
- International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
- Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT).
